The kids and I have been busy all morning making new playdough. (And listening to the same Star Wars/Indiana Jones music on repeat. Mitchell is majorly obsessed. Are all boys born with a John Williams gene?) I came across this recipe five years ago and have stuck with it ever since. It's so easy to make, five minutes max. It's perfectly smooth and never gets old.
Plus, it's non-toxic.
That's right! I said non-toxic! You can eat it for dinner! Your baby can suck on it like a pacifier! You can have it for an after school snack!
Oh, I just love anything non-toxic.
Alright. True confession. I don't care too much about toxic vs. non. I know, I should. But I don't. I use bleach all the time. I love Ajax. I spray 409 on my counters and I even light candles around my house. Oh, and I'm pretty sure my own lungs are charred from living above a smoker during college, in an apartment that was covered in asbestos with chipped paint and lead poisoning, so really, there's no hope for me anyway. But, still, I like to throw words like "non-toxic" around anyway, just so I can feel like a rich celebrity. You know the type...they fill their cars with vegetable oil, clean their homes with fresh squeezed lime juice mixed with purified water and, most importantly, dress their babies in clothes made from recycled seaweed.
I'm not quite there. But non-toxic playdough is a good start, right?
Homemade Playdough
from Kids Cooking, by Klutz
from Kids Cooking, by Klutz
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
2 Teaspoons food coloring
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup water
Mix flour, salt and cream of tarter in a medium pot. Add water, food coloring and oil. Stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes. It will look like a big lumpy mess, but don't worry. Just keep stirring. When it forms a ball in the center, turn off stove and knead with a little bit of flour. (It will be hot, so if your hands are not accustomed to 3rd degree burns, like mine happen to be, then you can let it cool.)
Store in ziploc bag in fridge.

thnx for the recipe! i've been wanting a fun project to do with addison. this is it!
p.s.- yes, i believe every boy is born with the john williams gene. and i can top you...
every time i get in my car, the soundtrack from pete's dragon is blaring over the cd player. it's ALL addison wants to listen to. the same three songs, over and over and over...
i go to bed singing 'it's a brazzle dazzle day' in my head (no joke!)
I love how I can copy and save all your recipes to my special "Becca's Recipe" folder right on my desktop. If I can get past my fear of play-dough in my carpet, I would love to try this. Do you know a good therapist?
CHARGE YOUR CELL PHONE! 3 or 4 unanswered texts...ahhhhhhhhhhh!
And now I know you were home. Dust!
the most impressive thing is how deep you got the colors. Nice.
going to try it today :)
thanx i needed something for preschool,
You are hilarious! I love the vibrant colors, how did you get that so red?
I am always looking for a good play dough recipe...it seems like it's always hit and miss for me, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I have noticed the best ones always have cream of tartar in them. Funny post, Becca!
You have such an eye. I love the balls of dough lined up in a row. Thanks for sharing! I will keep an image of that in my mind for the next time I need playdough.
I feel a little hurt that you were making fun of the dress I just handmade from homegrown flax and recycled seaweed brought back from LaJolla Cove. But that's OK. I have to learn to get over that.
JK.
